Canopy Development has designed a new high performance modular home, BoatHouse, which will capitalize on two under-served and fast growing markets: second home residences and boutique resorts in remote tropical locations.
Canopy creates tropical home and resort products targeting the kind of person oriented towards nature, health & well being. We build homes based on a unique platform that allows people to live and vacation in a way that is consistent with their beliefs and ethics. We are not just tweaking the existing model – we are starting from a blank slate using a multi-disciplinary approach led by experts in design, systems (energy, water, waste) and resort development.
In response to a broad and well documented shift in market preferences away from the ‘luxury, branded, large scale, predictable’ resort experience to one that is more ‘authentic, local, small scale, and integrated with nature’, the Canopy team has designed BoatHouse, a high-performance, self contained (solar energy, water collection, black and grey water processing), ‘off the grid’, modular home and resort unit that is ideally suited for sensitive and challenging tropical locations. Canopy is currently engineering a prototype unit and establishing manufacturing relationships for the various components of the structure.

BoatHouse is inspired by the design and performance of a boat and intended to meet a growing need in the tropical resort home market. The core attributes of a yacht – self- sufficiency, beauty, functionality, and complete immersion in nature – are translated onto land in the form of BoatHouse. The house is designed for high-performance, to achieve an extended life cycle and ultimately full recyclability in a style that responds directly to the surrounding natural environment.
It is a pre-fabricated modular home, addressing the lack of high-skilled labor across multiple trades in desired home locations, ensuring consistent quality, high design, performance, and economy. The home is climate responsive and context sensitive, yet integrates technologically advanced materials and systems. This allows for BoatHouse to be extremely low impact, impervious to (high winds) hurricanes, seismic, and storm surges, and completely self-sufficient, characteristics that are critical when considering development at any scale in ecologically sensitive and geographically remote locations.
